Hansen finished off his 2017 season with two starts at Double-A Birmingham, giving up five runs on 15 hits and three walks while striking out 17 over 10.1 innings, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports. "Having Hansen already in Double A is a huge step forward in terms of where he was a year ago when we drafted him," general manager Rick Hahn said. "It's a great tribute to him and our player development people."

Hansen finished up his first season in the White Sox organization, working on his changeup during the Arizona instructional league. "We'd like it a couple of miles slower," said Matt Zaleski, who was Hansen's pitching coach at rookie-level Great Falls. "But the location of it and all that kind of stuff was pretty dang good."

Hansen was promoted to Low-A Kannapolis on Tuesday, the Daily Herald's Scot Gregor reports. "We kind of held him hostage in Great Falls a little bit too long," director of player development Nick Capra said. "He's double-digit strikeouts every night. He's not walking people. We made a couple of mechanical changes, small issues he had coming in. He's really taken off with it."

2017

The 6-foot-7 right-hander torpedoed his draft stock with a horrific junior season at Oklahoma. He struggled out of the gate and briefly lost his spot in the rotation, finishing with a 5.06 ERA and 7.0 BB/9 over 37.1 innings. He signed for the full slot value at pick No. 49 and the White Sox appear to have gotten one of the steals of the draft. Hansen posted an 81:20 K:BB in 54.2 innings across stops in the Arizona, Pioneer and Sally leagues, and seems to have regained the form that once had him in the mix to go No. 1 overall in the 2016 draft. He features a plus fastball that sits in the mid-90s with late life, a plus slider and potentially plus curveball. Hansen does not need his changeup right now, but it figures to be his fourth best pitch -- a potentially average offering. He does not project to have pinpoint control, but the stuff is so overpowering that he could be a No. 2 starter who racks up strikeouts.
